Missouri residents may be surprised to learn that the statewide average of domestic violence according to statistics released for 2012 from the Highway Patrol indicates that for every 100,000 residents, there are 686 domestic violence incidents. That may seem like a low number at first glance, but victims of domestic violence know that even one victim in 100,000 is too many. It is a fear that nobody should have to suffer, the fear of being at home with your spouse or significant other.
A woman was recently killed in Audrain County, where domestic violence is over twice the statewide average, with nearly 1,500 of every 100,000 residents suffering. The Missouri woman was allegedly murdered by her romantic partner of eight years, a man against whom a protection order was filed by someone back in 2008. The previous protection order might indicate that the man had a history of violence, and begs the question of why, in such a case, someone would stick around a violent person for eight years.
Those who have faced or currently face instances of domestic violence might understand that sometimes it isn’t as simple as just leaving. Violent romantic partners can induce fear into their victims and make them think that trying to escape will only make things worse when their abuser eventually finds them. This is just what an abuser wants a victim to think, but the law can ensure that you are safe and protected in the future.
