The Super Bowl is over, and New England has another feather in their cap. But while the exciting game had the attention of the entire nation, the NFL took the opportunity to raise awareness about a very serious issue: domestic violence. You may have spotted the 60 second spot featuring a phone conversation based on an actual event in which a woman called 911 to report her situation. In order to avoid raising the suspicion of her nearby attacker, the woman pretended to be ordering a pizza.
Those who have never faced domestic abuse may not fully appreciate the severity of the issue, but it is a real problem that many people face on a daily basis. Imagine, if you can, feeling like a prisoner in our own home, worried about when your domestic partner or spouse is going to lose it and take their anger out on you. Imagine that they tell you how they will chase you no matter where you run, or hurt your family if you try to leave. What can you do?
Fortunately for victims of domestic abuse, the law is on your side. Missouri takes domestic abuse cases very seriously, and victims of domestic abuse have options to protect them, including a protective order that can see your abuser arrested simply for coming near you.
It is understandably frightening to attempt to escape from your harasser, which is why the law moves very swiftly to ensure that domestic abuse is stopped when it is reported. If you can, it may be beneficial that you meet with an attorney or call the police to report your case and have the law work to defend you from further abuse. Protection is available.
