Divorce has a negative connotation in society, implying that a marriage has failed or that the married couple could not put forth the effort required to make the marriage work. Despite this, divorce is not something that a married couple should avoid simply because of what society says. Here’s the truth: people change, and marriages that were once happy may simply morph into a union that is no long viable for one or both parties involved. This is especially true for people in the military.
You often hear stories about soldiers who go off to war and come back changed, and it’s understandable. Men and women who serve in the military are exposed to violence as they fight to protect the freedoms that we hold so dear, and witnessing these atrocities can change people. When they come home from tours in foreign countries, they may find that a marriage that was once easy and happy is no longer beneficial.
The same can be said for spouses who are left behind as soldiers are deployed. Being away from a loved one can not only put a strain on a marriage but just as the military spouse has experiences that may change him or her, so does the non-military spouse. After months of deployment, the two people who were happily married may no longer exist, and two strangers could end up sharing a bed.
If this sounds like a scenario that you’re familiar with, remember that divorce is nothing to be ashamed of. If you are in a marriage that is no longer working out, do not be afraid to consider divorce, and feel free to contact an attorney who can answer any questions you may have.
